MGM's Thin Man tv series based on the novel The Thin Man, by Dashiell Hammett, featured Asta, a wire haired fox terrier, the first TV dog with an urban sensibility. His owners, the wealthy, sophisticated, hard-drinking, wisecracking couple, Nick and Nora Charles, played by William Powell and Myrna Loy, were classic movie characters. Asta found clues, created diversions to get Nick and Nora out of tough situations, and romped in bed with the two of them at the end of the day. The Thin Man was the basis for six movies, a radio series, and a television series that ran from 1934 to the 1950s.
